Minerals Minerals are a spectacular group of specimens. Minerals make up
rocks. If you look at granite, it contains three minerals: quartz, mica,and feldspar. Minerals have formula’s just like water, H2O. The formula for quartz is SIO2. Pyrite is FeS2, and so on. They also have hardnesses. Quartz would be 7. There is a scale called moh’s scale. It names different minerals in order from softest to hardest. This is what it looks like. Quartz is the most common mineral. Quartz is found in many different rocks. Sand is actually crushed up quartz. It has the hardness of seven on moh’s scale. There are different types of quartz. Rose quartz, Red quartz, Smoky quartz, and Yellow quartz, are some examples.

Diamond is the hardest substance in the world. Diamond is used for many things. People use it for tools. Some people use it for wedding rings. Diamond is made from carbon. The carbon is pressed together really hard and then it makes diamond.
